Balminas review of Cat Socrates

After much discussion and debates, my group members, comprising of myself (Balminas), and Azlina decided to use Cat Socrates, located at Bras Basah Complex, as our observational study.

Reason being, we found Cat Socrates interesting, as the shop not only sells unique, one-of-a-kind handmade crafts that are not found elsewhere but they also have a mini cafe at the back of the shop close to the window, where its patrons can simply kick back, relax and enjoy the view while sipping on a bottle of Iced Lemon Tea and doing their work at the same time.

Upon entering the shop, you would be greeted warmly by the shop owner herself, who stands behind a counter on the left. Looking around the shop, you will see shelves stocked full of handmade crafts, such as tote bags, hats, ornaments, bangles, necklaces, greeting cards and such, that were either donated or sold to the shop owner to sell to other customers. If you were to walk a few steps ahead into the depths of the shop, you will find a row of tables and chairs, which is where the cafe is.

We sat ourselves down, ordered a round of drinks and got down to business, which is tackling our assignments. The cozy ambience and the gentle soothing music playing in the background made all of us feel relaxed and take a load of our minds so that we were able to concentrate on doing our assignments.

There was even a sign on the table saying 'Make yourselves feel comfortable and feel at home. Just don't bring the store goods into the cafe'. The shop-cum-cafe itself was air-conditioned and peaceful.

Where it makes you feel relaxed and in a way ease the tension
Let's just let the pictures do the talking

Helen a native from shanghai who came to singapore and open a shop in bras basah complex with the original intent to sell books from china. However, it didn’t bring much profit, thus she resort to selling stuff that interest her, mostly, vintage and items of nostalgia which to her surprise, captivates and aroused the interest of singaporeans. Catsocrates, as the name suggest, is a shop which has no concept other then being a shop that Helen liked, in other words, the shop sells only things she liked, the shop look like the way she liked and it even have a small “café” which sells the drinks and cakes which she likes. The concept of the shop is her own personality and interest. Being a former fashion designer from shanghai, the items, clothes, and accessories found in her shop is a reflection of her former occupation. However, this is where the link to her past ends, as she wanted to escape the hectic lifestyle of a designer and enjoys a more relax and a little laidback lifestyle by joining the retail industry. In catsocrates, the customers are encouraged to be free in expressing their own individual creativity, in forms of scribbles, guitar playing and even photography or in any other way the customers could think of. Customers are free to do or be anyone they want to be, this in a way, is only unique to Catsocrates. p.s. staying true to Helen’s concept, catsocrates is named after her favourite animal, a cat.
